Session 5

Why would God choose me?

From 2 Samuel: A 5-Week Devotional

Has God’s grace ever overwhelmed you? We know who we are, what we’ve done, and how undeserving we are of all that God has blessed us with. Who are we that God would choose us?

David had a moment like this in 2 Samuel 7:18-29. In the beginning of 2 Samuel 7, David found out God had much bigger plans for his life. God was going to give David’s family a kingdom that would last forever—Jesus would be born to David’s family.

David expressed awe that God chose David’s family and his people, the Israelites, out of all the people in the world to redeem, rescue, and make into a great nation (2 Samuel 7:18-24). David chose to confidently and humbly accept God’s promises because David understood it wasn’t because of David’s own greatness that God was doing these things for him, but because of God’s greatness and to bring glory to His name (2 Samuel 7:25-29).

God chose to redeem and rescue us, as well, through a relationship with Jesus. And, He has a great plan for each of us that is for our good and His glory.

God has a great plan for each of us that is for our good and His glory.

As we thank God for all He has done for us, our understanding of how great He is and how undeserving we are increases. We see more of who God is and how much He loves us. We see how God wants to work through us to save the world and bring glory to His name.

When we understand who God is and what He wants to do in our lives, we can live with humble confidence—embracing His promises, knowing that He blesses us and works through us because of His greatness, not ours.

Reflect:

  • What is one thing God has done for you that you didn’t deserve? Have you thanked Him for it lately?
  • Has there been a moment when you started a relationship with Jesus? If not, you can do it today.
  • What is one way you can embrace God’s promises with humility and confidence?
