How the history of a family farm became a grandson’s proof that you can’t outgive God

Jason Wilson’s story

Jason Wilson discovered the check when he was sifting and sorting through the boxes of memories his grandfather had left behind in the old farmhouse.

The Abbeville, S.C., farmer had written out the check to his local church on April 19 of 1964 for the sum of $6. Across the center of the yellowing paper of the State Bank and Trust Co. was the red stamp marked "paid."

The memo line was blank. Behind it was another check just like it. And another. And another.

What were all those checks for? Inside some other moldering boxes lay the solution to the puzzle. The 250-acre farm's tax records showed his grandfather's annual income was about $3,000 or $60 a week, making that $6 equal to 10 percent of his earnings.

The boxes of checks Jason discovered were tithes -- records of William P. Wilson's faithful giving.
