Session 16

Have you ever forgotten to say thank you?

From 1 Samuel: A 6-Week Devotional

When we are in crisis mode it’s natural to look to those surrounding us for help. Thankfulness towards our rescuers comes easily during these times.

On the contrary, during seasons of prosperity and success, it’s easy to forget the help we received. Our focus transitions inwardly, and we are so busy with our “success” that our need for others is less obvious. In these situations, are we as generous with our gratitude?

In 1 Samuel 25, David protects Nabal’s shepherds, who were staying among David’s men. Nabal is successful, and David asks Nabal if he would be willing to share his provisions. Nabal refuses this reasonable request with an emphatic, “No,” which leads to more problems. Nabal portrays both a spirit of unthankfulness and a stronghold of greed.

Nabal illustrates what can happen when greed clouds judgment. Our fists can become clenched so tightly on our possessions, that we forget to thank the people who helped us attain them.

The truth is no one accomplishes anything alone. As the author of our stories, God interweaves our lives together, so that we bless others at the same time we are blessed by them. When we show gratitude, we protect against the trap of selfishness. The Bible is clear that regardless of the season we are in, we are to exhibit a thankful spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

Let’s not become so focused on our own goals we miss the opportunity to thank those who help us reach them along the way. When we keep our eyes focused on God and His plans, rather than our own goals, we also see the opportunities to thank people who are helping us get where we are going.

Reflect:

  • How has thankfulness been easier or harder during different seasons of your life?
  • Who is one person who has helped through these seasons?
  • What is one practical way you can reach out and show your gratitude towards that person today?
