Session 32

Who can you count on?

From 1 Samuel: A 6-Week Devotional

In all our relationships, we expect to be able to count on the other person. While we were growing up, we looked to our older siblings or cousins to look out for us and help us with bullies. As we turned into adults, we used those relationships to help us learn how to pick good people to be in our lives. Everyone needs someone to have their back.

We see this type of relationship between Jonathan and his armor-bearer. Their bond was so strong they were able to tackle a large army in 1 Samuel 14:1-23.

Jonathan’s armor-bearer may not have been exactly sure of how he could help, but he knew that he could be there for Jonathan. It’s the armor-bearer’s promise in 1 Samuel 14:7: “Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul” that exemplifies what we all want in a relationship—someone who is with us all the way.

We may not be able to do something to help a friend as they go through certain issues, but sometimes our presence is enough. We all need to know someone is there for us and will still be there for us when things get rough. Going through hard things with someone who has our back, gives us the courage to keep moving, just like the armor bearer’s promise spurred Jonathan on to carry out his plan.

Reflect:

  • What situation have you been in when you needed your friends or family the most?
  • What is one way you have been able to help your friends and family in their times of need?
  • Who is one person who has your back? Whose back do you have? What is one way you can invest in those relationships today?
